About the Twi language

Twi is an Akan language belonging to the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo family. It covers three main dialects: Asante Twi (spoken in the Ashanti Region), Akuapem Twi (spoken in the Eastern Region), and Bono Twi (spoken in the Bono Region). While the dialects differ in pronunciation and some vocabulary, speakers across these groups understand each other clearly.

Twi serves as a lingua franca across much of Ghana, used in markets, churches, trotros, and everyday conversation between people from different ethnic groups. It is tonal, meaning pitch changes meaning, and it carries one of the richest proverb traditions in all of Africa. The Akan naming system, where every child is given a day name based on the day of the week they were born, is one of the most recognized cultural contributions of the Twi-speaking world.
