Gã belongs to the Ga-Dangme group within the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family. It is the indigenous language of the people who have called the land around present-day Accra home for centuries. Even as Accra grew into one of West Africa’s largest cities, Gã remained the cultural and ceremonial language of the Gã people.
The most important annual event in the Gã calendar is the Homowo harvest festival. The name means “hooting at hunger” in Gã, a reference to a period of famine the community survived long ago. During Homowo, families gather to share traditional foods like kpokpoi, a dish made from palm nut soup and fermented corn flour. The festival marks both memory and gratitude, and it is deeply connected to the Gã language and identity.
The Gã dictionary on Language Roots Hub covers everyday words, greetings, numbers, family terms, cultural vocabulary, and common phrases searchable in Gã, English, and French. It is a practical resource for anyone learning Gã, doing research on Accra’s indigenous heritage, or connecting with Gã culture from the diaspora.
