Who Are the Nawdba?
The Nawdba are the people of the Doufelgou District in northern Togo, settled on a plateau in the highlands between the Kabiyè Mountains and the Défalé Chain. Their language, Nawdm, belongs to the Gur branch of the Niger-Congo family, which makes it a linguistic cousin to Kabiyè and several other languages spoken across northern Togo and Ghana.
Nawdm speakers are also found in parts of Ghana, including the Greater Accra Region and the Oti Region. The language has survived across generations through community life, oral tradition, and family bonds, but it has almost no presence in digital resources. That is exactly what Language Roots Hub is working to change.
