Kabiyè is one of Togo’s two national languages, spoken by millions of people in the Kara Region and surrounding areas of northern Togo. It is a language with a strong oral tradition, a distinctive cultural identity, and one of the most remarkable coming-of-age ceremonies in West Africa. The Language Roots Hub Kabiyè Wall Calendar 2027 puts that language on the wall for all twelve months of the year.
Every page carries the Kabiyè traditional month name for that period. Public holidays are listed in Kabiyè, French, and English side by side. And two of the most significant events in Kabiyè cultural life, the Evala wrestling festival and the Akpema ceremony, are marked with context throughout the year.

Evala and Akpema: The Ceremonies That Define Kabiyè Identity
Every July, young Kabiyè men enter the mountains above Kara. They fast, they maintain celibacy, they climb three specific peaks, and they spend a week separated from their families in preparation for what comes next. Then comes Evala, the traditional wrestling festival where these young men compete before their communities in matches that mark their transition into adulthood.
Evala is not sport in the casual sense. It is a rite of passage that the Kabiyè people have practiced across generations, and it is one of the most photographed and discussed cultural events in Togo. The Akpema ceremony marks the equivalent passage for young women. Both are significant moments in the Kabiyè year, and both appear in this calendar.
Why a Kabiyè Calendar?
Kabiyè is an official national language of Togo, yet resources in Kabiyè are still limited compared to French. A twelve-month wall calendar in Kabiyè places the language in the daily life of a home or office in a way that a dictionary or phrase book cannot. You see it every morning when you check the date. Over a full year, that adds up to genuine exposure.
For the Kabiyè diaspora in Ghana, Europe, and North America, the calendar is also a way to hold on to something from home in a practical format.
Who Is This For?
It is for Kabiyè families in Togo, Ghana, and abroad. It works well for schools and churches in northern Togo, missionaries and aid workers in Kabiyè-speaking communities, language researchers, and anyone who wants to mark the year in a language that carries genuine heritage.
