Among the Nawdba people of northern Togo and Ghana, a personal name is far more than an identifier. It can carry a prayer, a family memory, a message from parents to a child, or a reflection on the difficult and joyful moments of life. The Nawdm language has a rich tradition of deeply meaningful personal names, and preserving those names together with their meanings is an important part of protecting the culture itself.
This article gathers a collection of Nawdm personal names along with their suggested meanings in French. It is the result of patient community research, and we want to be honest with you: this is a living document, not a finished one. The names are real. The research is real. But finding the exact meaning of each name has not always been simple, and we know this list is far from complete.
Important Notice: These Are Suggested Meanings
The meanings given in this list are suggested interpretations. They are not final. They represent our best effort based on available research and community knowledge gathered so far. The real depth of a Nawdm name often depends on family context, regional usage, and spoken tradition that is difficult to fully capture in writing.
Some names below are missing their meaning entirely. Some meanings may be incomplete. And some may need to be corrected. We are honest about that, and we are reaching out to the community for help.
We warmly invite every speaker of Nawdm, every elder, and every community member to contribute:
- Correct any meaning that is wrong or incomplete
- Confirm a meaning that you know to be accurate
- Share names that are not yet on this list, along with their meanings
- Tell us the story or context behind a name if you know it
You can share your input by leaving a comment at the bottom of this page or by sending us a message directly by email. Every single contribution will help us build a more accurate and complete reference that the whole Nawdba community can rely on for years to come. This is a collective effort, and your voice matters greatly.
About This Collection
The names below come from Nawdm-speaking communities in northern Togo and Ghana. They represent a wide range of life themes: names connected to God, names that express family situations, names carrying prayers or wishes for a child, names that mark difficult moments, and names that grew out of observations about a person’s character or behavior.
Some names appear with more than one possible meaning, reflecting the variation that naturally exists in a living oral language tradition. We have kept those variations where they appear in our source material, since each version may be in active use across different communities.
